Infineo: Death and DeFi
Today on stream we had on Bob and Cole from Infineo, a new RWA platform that’s creating a REIT style token for whole life insurance. There’s a lot more to the project, they will be digitizing whole life insurance policies and setting up secondary markets… but what’s interesting about their product is that it’s truly up-only. The asset collects cash monthly and cannot fall in value. This would make it a prime target for DeFi lending, which Cole told me you could offer over 100% LTV for.
The only downside is that it’s a security, it has to be traded on Provenance and there’s a 1 year lock up from when you buy it. The DeFi applications are expansive though. Even though the collateral can’t be sold… you can borrow against the asset in the first year. So maybe there is some incredible looping that can take place.
Thor did the numbers on Altcoin launches
Here's a breakdown of the report on new altcoins in 2024 by Thor:
Launch and Supply: A lot of new altcoins (21) have launched this year, spread out throughout the first few months. However, most of these coins have a relatively small amount of circulating supply (median around 13%).This means a large portion of the coins haven't been released yet, which could put downward pressure on the price in the future.
Valuation: Thor shows these new coins launched with high valuations (average market cap around $4 billion). This means investors might be paying a premium for these new projects, limiting potential for future price growth.
Performance: While the average price performance of these new coins is positive (around 21%), the median performance is actually negative (around -17%). This big difference is because one coin ($ONDO) did exceptionally well. Overall, these new coins haven't kept up with established currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, which have all seen significant growth this year.
Takeaway: Despite the hype around new altcoins, investing in a bunch of them hasn't been a successful strategy in 2024. It might be a bull market for ETH and BTC, but alts are no where near the big movers of 2024… yet.
